QUEEN ANNE’S COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL DRESS POLICY
School Year 2009-2010
THE DRESS CODE WILL BE IN EFFECT THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL.
The responsibility for appropriate student dress lies with the student and his/her parent(s) or guardian(s). It is recommended that parents and students exercise discretion and good taste in selecting school apparel. The definition of “appropriate dress” will differ from setting to setting and from situation to situation. There are, however, some basic standards to which students should adhere while in school so learning is not compromised and health and safety are not jeopardized. Staff members cannot be placed in a situation where they feel uncomfortable with the attire of either male or female students. Schools must provide an atmosphere conducive to learning; therefore, any mode of dress that attracts an unusual amount of attention away from learning is unacceptable. In all cases, students should dress in a manner that is clean, appropriate to the setting, and not disruptive to the educational process.
See below for some examples of inappropriate dress:
- Students are prohibited from wearing or displaying slogans, words, pictures, or symbols that acknowledge or support racial prejudice including, but not limited to, the following: the Confederate flag, the swastika, and pictures of individuals or groups that have been identified as promoting racism, violence, sexually suggestive graphics, KKK or Malcolm-X/black-power symbols.
- Articles of clothing, promoting alcohol, tobacco, profanity, drugs, or weapons are prohibited.
- Male and female students shall not wear clothing that is unduly revealing: i.e., extreme short shorts, or mini skirts/dresses. Tops such as halter, tank, tube, camisoles, spaghetti straps, or see-through are prohibited. Any clothing that exposes the midriff, chest area, shoulders or reveals undergarments are inappropriate for school. Shoulders, chest area, and midriff must be fully covered.
- Students are prohibited from wearing or having chains attached to their garments.
- Students should wear shoes that fit securely and are appropriate for the applicable school setting.
- Hats, caps, sun visors, bandanas, sweatbands, dorags, and other head coverings may not be worn inside the building.
If students are inappropriately dressed, the parent/guardian or emergency contact will be called to bring appropriate clothing.
Refusal to adhere to these policies may result in disciplinary action being taken.
